Honored to have received an invitation from Principal Leonel Argumedo to attend this wonderful cultural celebration honoring Día de Muertos with singer Gabriela Sepúlveda on this Halloween morning.
When you combine cultural appreciation with a role model like Gabriela—someone who shares her journey of pursuing her dream to become a singer—you not only empower those elementary students who are eager to hear stories of people like them, but also inspire them to follow their passions despite the challenges they may face. You help strengthen their pride in their roots and remind them that identity is something to embrace and celebrate.
Gabriela beautifully guided the students through the meaning of Día de Muertos and the significance of the Ofrendas—the altars honoring loved ones—connecting those traditions to her own journey.
She shared moments of pride, from performing the U.S. national anthem at major events to completing college while traveling and working, demonstrating both her discipline and persistence, and her deep respect for her heritage.
It was magical to see children from all backgrounds singing, clapping, sharing their favorite activities, and even chasing after her as she left, asking if she would come back again.
I’m certain the kids learned so much in those 30–45 minutes that her talk lasted. They connected with her story, and they will remember this day for a long time.
